Life is so easy
when you are young.
When kisses heal boo-boos
and lullabies are sung.
It seemed that life could go on for years,
as long as the nightlight was there to quiet our fears.
Why does growing up
have to be so hard?
When did the world become
bigger than our own back yard?
There is no more recess
to stop the stress of the school day.
There are no more falling stars
that can take our worries away.
Decisions are more complicated
now that we are grown,
why can’t we go back
to when life was our own?
I decided to read this poem to the class because what it reflects on makes complete sense in my life. This poem explains about how tough life can be while growing up. In the beginning of the poem, it mentions, “Life is so easy when you are young”; and near the end of the poem, it says “Decisions are more complicated now that we are grown, why can’t we go back to when life was our own.” This basically means that as a young child, you can get away with anything and life operates much faster and easy going, but as an older person, you start to get responsibilities and more expectations. I like how the poet made most words rhyme, and has also used many of the poetic devises we used in class. Here they are: rhyme, personification, and hyperbole. There was a continuous rhyme scheme in this poem and it kept me wanting to read it ;( This is how I chose it). In the poem Growing Up, I thought that the personification and hyperbole parts of the poem, share the same categories. So here are a few. I imagined personification and hyperbole in this poem by, the sight of falling stars trying to take our worries away, and the sight of a nightlight there to quiet our fears. I think that these are perfect examples of personification and hyperboles because, I know that nightlights and stars don’t actually calm us down and make us feel better! But it’s a perfect way of describing how some children need a nightlight, which supposedly comforts them, because they are afraid of the dark. And for the other example, the poet is trying to show that falling stars are a sign of hope and granting wishes for young children and for older people it’s not available for them.
